STUDENT FAQ

Q: What is Expanding Your Horizons (EYH)?

A: The Chicago EYH is a conference designed for girls in grades 6 – 8 from local school districts. Our conference encourages girls to take interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by giving them a chance to interact with positive female role models and participate in memorable hands-on workshops. At EYH conferences girls don’t just hear about science, they do science!

Q: What is the association between Techbridge Girls and Expanding Your Horizons?

EYH is partnered nation-wide with Techbridge Girls, an award-winning leader and innovator in informal STEM education that advocates equity and fair access to STEM learning experiences for BIPOC girls from marginalized communities. Since 2000, Techbridge Girls has trained over 7,000 girls, 20,000 educators, 1,400 family members, and 1,000 volunteers.

Q: When will I know which workshops I have been assigned to?
You will receive your workshop assignments the morning of the conference.

Q: What will I do at an EYH conference?

Students will hear an inspirational talk from our keynote speaker, participate in several interactive workshops that will be led by STEM professionals from the Chicagoland area, and share a group lunch (which will be provided by EYH). These workshops include activities such as building LEGO robots, extracting their own DNA, and finding the speed of light using chocolate.  While learning more about STEM, students will get to learn about the careers and stories of various role models in the field. We hope that students will learn how fulfilling and exciting STEM careers can be!

PARENT & TEACHER FAQ

Q: I am a teacher and would like to bring my entire class. Can I do this?
We do not hold spots for classes or groups. However, teachers may register interested students individually as long as registration is open. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. If you register on your student’s behalf, please make sure you include contact information for their parent or guardian.

Q: What can I expect in the Parent-Teacher program?

The Parent Program will include a college panel that will inform parents about preparing for college, careers in STEM, and how to support your child throughout their academics. The panel will consist of university students and administrators who will also be answering any additional questions from parents in the audience. It will also feature a summer camp fair featuring summer and after school programs across the Chicagoland area that will be available to parents from 9:00am-3:00pm. If you are interested but unable to attend the event, we will be sure to provide the list of participants on our website for your convenience.

Q: Do parents or teachers need to register as well?

Parents and teachers are required to register if they would like to attend our Parent Program for interested parents that will have different speakers talk about other ways that parents and teachers can support STEM interests of girls.

Q: Can you guarantee that my student has the same schedule as her friend?

No–while it is possible for two girls attending the same three workshops to have different schedules, as each workshop is running at three different times. We do need to take into consideration the needs of all of our attendees.

Q: What time do we need to sign-in?

8 am – 8:45 am. Registration will be closing around 8:50 am the morning of the conference.

Q: Is my student guaranteed to get her top 3 choices of workshops?

Not necessarily. We are coordinating the scheduling of about 200-300 girls into ~15 different workshops, and some workshops may fill faster than others. Students who register earlier are given preference for their desired workshops. However, all of our workshops are of high quality with passionate workshop leaders, and your student may find herself interested in a field she had never heard of before if she attends a workshop that she had not initially been interested in!

Q: When do we know our daughter’s workshops?

Your daughter will receive her assigned workshops the morning of the conference.

Q: Can parents or teachers attend the workshops with their students?

We ask that only the students interact with the workshops, to maximize their engagement and their fun!
